Evelyn Godewin is traveling to Scotland with the old healer-woman Minerva. Minvera wants to return to her homeland before taking her last breath. Evelyn believes they are travelling to Minerva's Buchanan kin, so she's alarmed when Minvera informs her they've long since passed Buchanan land. It is on MacKerrick land that Minerva breathes her last. Lost and alone Evelyn takes refuge with an injured wolf in an abandoned hut.
Conall MacKerrick is slowly watching his people die. Years ago they were cursed by Minerva Buchanan. Since then, they have known no feast, only famine. Each year they have less crops, less livestock, and fewer people. As leader of his clan, Conall has had enough. Watching his own wife and bairn perish was the last straw. He intends to take to the woods to find the food his people so desperately need. He arrives at his Uncle Ronan's old hut to find that it's not as abandoned as he remembered.
Conall is stunned to find a woman and a wolf staying in his uncle's old hut. He tries to throw them both out, but stops when she tells him she's a Buchanan. Suddenly this mystery woman is the answer to his prayers. Through her he can finally end this curse and save his people.
Heather Grothaus has written another dazzling medieval tale. I love the way she effortlessly weaves history and magic together. Evelyn and Conall are wonderful together; they are passionate and loving. Their relationship has to be my favorite part of this book. Evelyn's menagerie is my second favorite part. She collects pets the way most people collect shoes. Despite the ever increasing number of animals sharing their small hut, Conall still finds himself falling for Evelyn. Their is still the issue of deceit between them; Evelyn is not a Buchanan and Conall only courted her because he though she was. Yet somehow, no matter the obstacle you know love will rise above it all.
This book took me through ups and downs, but I was only truly upset once I'd read the last page and it was all over. I thoroughly enjoyed reading THE HIGHLANDER and I'll be waiting with baited breath for more from Heather Grothaus Buy From Amazon
