The Shadow Walker by Michael Walters Reviewed By happyruby

A serial killer is haunting the streets of Ulan Baatar, the capital city of Mongolia. So far there have been three deaths and when a fourth is discovered in the city’s most expensive hotel, Negrui, ex-head of the Serious Crime Squad, is ordered back to his previous roll.

Negrui is glad to be working on the murders but very careful not to throw his weight around with Doripalam, who is now in Negrui’s former position with the Serious Crime Squad. Drew McLeish, a senior British CID officer is sent to Mongolia to assist with the investigation.

The three investigators seem to be running into a dead-end every step of the way. Mining is a big thing now in Mongolia with several different countries showing interest in Mongolian resources. The fourth death was that of Ian Ransom, a British geologist, but a background check on Ransom reveals nothing that points to his murder.

When a member of the Serious Crime Squad is murdered Negrui decides to retrace the work that Delgerbayar, the victim, has been involved in since his assignment had to do with gold prospecting. Negrui and McLeish travel to the Gobi Desert to retrace Delgerbayar’s footsteps. The Gobi Desert is a vacation spot for Mongolians.

The final tracking down of the serial killer was not easy but Negrui finally accomplished the task. The story itself was exciting and the characters were realistic. The descriptions of Mongolia and the way of life there made the book worth reading and the story was spell-binding.

About happyruby

HappyRuby is a combination of the names of two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that I owned - Happy Talk and Karri's Ruby, both deceased now but I do have a dog and cat. I live in the Midwest so enjoy a change of seasons. I am an office manager for two plants that process pet food ingredients. I worked a number of years as an office manager for a law office. I only work part-time now which gives me more time to read. My daughter lives in W. VA and is a huge fan of mystery - the darker the better. My other daughter is into reading romance and my granddaughter loves fantasy. I very much enjoy reading mystery, hard-boiled or cozy.
