Ten years ago Beth fled from her evil stepmother. At seventeen she faked her own death and joined the Compound run by the seven Founders. In this strict community hard work is prized above all else, and temptation is to be avoided...or else. Men and women do not interact in any way. Women do the domestic work; men do the physical labor. Beth is content with her existence until a newcomer arrives.
Stephen Trent is sure he's been sent on this lame assignment as punishment for going overboard on his expense account. But his boss doesn't understand that being an undercover investigative reporter isn't cheap. As far as Stephen is concerned this cult appears harmless, if more than a little prudish. Then he sees her, and his world is turned upside down.
Despite constant lectures on the dangers of the flesh, Beth can't help being drawn to Stephen. For the first time in a long time, she longs for the touch of a man; she yearns for the forbidden. Giving in to their desires is a bigger risk than either of them is aware of. Each of them has something to hide. And it would seem this commune is not as harmless as it may appear.
I absolutely adored this rendition of the Snow White story. Cathy Yardley breathes new life into an old classic. I wasn't sure how Snow White could be brought into the modern world, but I needn't have worried; she has done it beautifully. I did not want to put this book down; I flew through the pages. The chemistry between Beth and Stephen is intense from the very beginning. Even more so against so repressed a backdrop. If you want a fairy tale with spice, this is a book you must read.
