Action abounds in "Gone Tomorrow." Jack Reacher is riding the New York subway when he sees a woman who has 11 points of a female suicide bomber. When he approaches her and offers to help, she pulls a gun and kills herself.
After giving his statement to the police, he meets the woman's brother, a cop himself. He tells Reacher that his sister, Susan Mark, couldn't kill herself. Jake Mark tells Reacher that his sister worked for the Pentagon.
There are men outside the train station and they ask if the woman handed anything to Reacher or did she mention the names John Swanson or Lila Hoth? They didn't but the names give him something to investigate. He buys a book Swanson wrote about his life and finds that Congressman Swanson was a member of the Delta Forces and went on a number of missions where he received medals. A description of the details of the missions was not included.
Reacher travels to DC and speaks to Swanson but doesn't learn anything.
Then he returns to New York and meets Lila and her mother. Lila tells him that Susan Mark was helping her find a serviceman named John who knew her mother in Berlin. Reacher thinks the women are sympathethic but their story isn't true. They tell him a number of lies and he figures they are after Swanson to embarrass him and maybe the country.
As the intelligently written plot moves along, we are given a glance of Reacher's reasoning. He puts himself in t he path of Lila and her followers knowing that he can take care of himself and find out what they are up to. Finally he goes back to the Congressman and his assistant. They are all looking for a memory stick that tells of what the Congressman did, not in Berlin but in Afghanistan.
Child's last novel, "Nothing to Lose" was a disappointment to many of his readers but with "Gone Tomorrow" he is back to the pinnicle of action thrillers. Most of the action takes place in Manhattan and Child's descriptions of New York and its inhabitatants are described to perfection.Review By Randy Larkin | Book Review of Gone Tomorrow by Annette Dunlea
Gone Tomorrow is written by Lee Child. It is coming soon in paperback by Bantam Press and its ISBN is 059306402X. This is the 13th Jack Reacher novel is narrated in the first person. It is fast paced, full of suspense and has a tight plot. It involves villians, a politician, a secret and a missing child. This best seller has a slow build up of suspense and an exciting climax. The novel begins in the midst of action with Reacher travelling on the subway. His attention is drawn to a woman Susan Marks whom he suspects is a suicide bomber but he is wrong. She blows her own head off in front of him and this troubles Reacher. He decides to investigate what drove Susan to this action and here lies the plot and ultimately ends with Reacher taking on the bad guys. I highly recommend this action packed thriller.
