What has inspired you to write Coffeehouse Angel? How did it all start?
The main inspiration was a town called Poulsbo, where I spend a great deal of time writing in a little coffeehouse called Hots Shots Java. It's a Norwegian-inspired town, very picturesque, and even though I renamed it Nordby in my book, it's where Coffeehouse Angel takes place. I have photo of it on my website, http://www.suzanneselfors.com/
Another inspiration was a conversation I had with a friend who was desperately worried about her daughter's summer schedule. Worried that her daughter wasn't doing enough to get into a good college. This girl didn't have a minute to spare with all the lessons and clubs and sporting activities and still her mom was worried. It really stressed me out, just listening to her, and I realized that this is a serious stressor in teens' lives these days. So I brought that into Katrina's story, too.
What were some of the challenges you were faced with when writing Coffeehouse Angel?
How to write an angel. I wanted him to be uniquely my character, but still true to many of the angel mythologies out there. So I combined some elements from Christianity/Judaism/Islam and even borrowed from Greek Mythology, that's why he wears a kilt and has wings on his ankles, like Hermes.
In your story, Katrina is granted a wish that only works if its what she most desires. If you were granted one wish and one wish only, what would it be?
Well, honestly it would be for my kids to have long, healthy, happy lives. I know that's not very interesting but that's what it would be.
What do you hope readers will take away from your story?
