1. What people or influences inspired you to pursue writing as a career?
No people or influences, really. I've just always had stories in my head. Writing was just a way to get them out at first and then for entertainment...later on, I got serious about trying to get published.
2. Let's face it. Women are overworked. How do you juggle a hectic life and a demanding muse? Does real life ever get in the way of your writing?
:OP I'm actually one of the few writers who can honestly say I don't have a muse. An active imagination, yes, and sometimes I wish the stories wouldn't always attack at once.
Sometimes I think I let writing intrude on real life more than anything else. I get so focused on a story or something, that's my entire focus for a little while. I try to make sure I spend weekends with the kids and my DH, which is why they often travel out of town with me. They love going out of town... lol.
But yeah, sometimes real life cuts in on the writing. That can't be helped. Deadlines, stories, characters, none of it matters when there's a sick kid, family problems, and emergencies. The good thing about writing is that I don't have to punch a clock, so if I need a little time here and there away from the writing, I can take it, so long as I don't let myself fall behind.
3. Are you a plotter or a seat of the pants writer? Why?
Uh... natural inclination is by the seat of my pants. But lots of wasted efforts and false starts have finally got me to where I try to plot out a little, at least in my head.
4. Do you have an ultimate goal in your career?
One of these days, I have this killer horror book I want to write... at least I think it sounds killer. And a very complex sci fi/urban fantasy, but I'm going to need some technical assistance on that one. Until I have the time to devote to them, I'm letting them stay on the back burner.
Naturally, I'd like to see my name on the best seller lists, but if that happens, it happens. If it doesn't, I'm still living a dream that not everybody can have.
5. If you could time travel, what period of time would you like to visit and what three things would you take with you?
Hmmmmm... I dunno, can my family come? Will I get to come back? Providing the anwers are yes, America in the Columbus days, or even earlier. England back when London was just a village. Ireland... pretty much time... period. ;-)
I'd take a digital camera, lots of batteries and a mega huge, overstocked medicine cabinet, complete with antiobiotics, first aid supplies, and tylenol. ;-) Hey, that is ONE thing. You can't go to any hospital without finding that. It's not complete without all that stuff, so it's not really a one thing without it, either.
6. What is your favorite part of being an author?
Being able to take time when I need it for kids. Being able to take a lazy day if I need it for me. Being able to tell stories and people actually pay me money for it (man, is that sweet or what?) The friends I make. Sorry, there is no one part. |
