Description/Synopsis: Alice Kessler spent nine years in prison for the attempted murder of the drunk driver who killed her son. Now she’s returned home to Gray’s Island to reconnect with the son she left behind. Her boy, Jeremy, now a sullen teenager, is wrongly accused of rape, and mother and son are thrown together in a desperate attempt to prove his innocence. She’s aided by Colin McGinty, a recovering alcoholic and 9/11 widower, also recently returned to the island in the aftermath of his grandfather’s death. Colin’s grandfather, a famous artist, is best known for his haunting portrait, “Woman in Red,” which happens to be of Alice’s grandmother. In a tale that weaves the past with the present, we come to know the story behind the portrait, of the forbidden wartime romance between William McGinty and Eleanor Styles, and the deadly secret that bound them more tightly than even their love for each other. A secret that, more than half a century later, is about to be unburied, as Alice and Colin are drawn into a fragile romance of their own and the ghost of an enemy from long ago surfaces in the form of his grandson, the very man responsible for sending Alice to prison. |

Woman in Red by Eileen Goudge was an exquisite read. They say you should never judge a book by it's cover but in this case you most certainly should. The stunning beauty of the cover is only a sampling of what lies within. A must read for any romance lover.
Alice Kessler is your average mom in every way except that she has lost her oldest son to a freak accident. Driven by grief she cannot let go when the driver is found innocent. This in turn sets forth a chain of events leading her to make choices that are detrimental to herself and her family.
Colin McGinty is a man in crisis. Having lost his wife to the 9/11 Twin Towers tragedy, his life takes him on a self destructive path through a bottle. One of the best lawyers in New York before this tragedy he slowly looses all that his has worked so hard to achieve.
Alice is paroled from jail and heads home to Gray Island to try and see how much of her life she can reclaim. Colin heads to Gray Island to try and escape from the downward spiral his life has taken and to try and make a new life for himself at his grandfather's estate that he inherited. Both people meet on the island just as they depart from the ferry not realizing that their futures will become as entangled as a spider's web.
This story takes us from present to past showing how a set of events that happened long ago can still have a major play in events to come. The painting of the "Woman in Red" is a masterpiece in so many different ways and plays such a large role in this novel that its stunning beauty and underlying mystery takes us through chapter after chapter of love, friendship, tragedy, heartbreak, and so many other emotions that we don't have time to recover from one before another presents itself.
The author is brilliant, refreshing and a jewel to be noticed. One I am sure to be looking forward to seeing more of in the future. If you miss reading this book then you miss a true masterpiece. Review By terra57 |
