Evan Delaney is a heroine of our times: a woman with a big heart, a quick tongue and a hot temper that gets her into trouble. She is shocked to discover that Tabitha, her ex-sister-in-law, has joined The Remnant - the Reverend Pete Wyoming's fanatical band of disciples. And that Tabitha is trying to regain custody of her six-year-old son, Luke, currently in Evan's care while his father is posted to the Naval Air Warfare Center. Then one of the Remnant is killed, and Evan's brother is the prime suspect. With her boyfriend, lawyer Jesse Blackburn, Evan tries to clear her brother's name and rescue her nephew. In doing so, she finds herself caught up in a wild plan to steal weapons, and a blazing inferno on a Santa Barbara hillside.

Evan Delaney is caring for Luke, her six-year old nephew. Luke is the son of her brother Brian and his ex-wife Tabitha. Brian has custody of Luke but it seems Tabitha is back in the picture and not in a good way. Tabitha has joined the Remnant, a fanatical church group led by Peter Wyoming. Evan’s first inkling of this fact came when she confronted Wyoming while his group was picketing the funeral of one of Evan’s friends.
The leaders of the Remnant have convinced Tabitha that she must regain custody of her son and bring him into the fold of the church. Brian begs Evan to keep Luke safe but that is easier said than done. Even with the help of Jesse Blackburn, Evan’s lover, and Evan’s friends the Remnant is a force to be reckoned with.
When a murder of one of the Remnant leaders takes place Brian is accused of the murder. The situation becomes more desperate as each day goes by. The crazed leaders of the religious group will go to any measures to have their way and get their hands on Luke. Evan will not hesitate to do whatever she can to prevent this.
To even think about a group such as the Remnant actually existing is terrifying. To actually confront the group as Evan did to protect her nephew takes a lot of courage and will keep the reader on the edge of your chair but I am sure you will keep on reading.
China Lake is an exciting book. The Remnant is an example of what fanatics are capable of and how much havoc these groups can create. The more I read about Evan Delaney the more I want to read.
